Prel-Gard tempered glass 

  • Fully tempered glass is about four times stronger than annealed (non-tempered) glass of the same thickness.
  • Glass breaks into small, dull fragments ensuring the protection of individuals.
  • Offers increased resistance to wind and snow loads as well as high thermal stresses. 
  • Meets the requirements of Safety Glazing Standards. 

Characteristics

  • Heat-treating is a process used during the manufacture of tempered glass.  The glass is heated in an oven at a high temperature (1150º F / 621º C), then it is cooled rapidly by blowing air onto both surfaces.
  • The cooling process causes a compression envelope around the glass surface and edges and a balanced tension stress within the glass itself. This equilibrium of stresses increases the strength of the glass.
  • The compression of the tempered glass surface is greater than 10,000 psi (68.9 MPa), therefore meeting the ASTM C1048 standard.
  • The glass must be cut to size and shaped before being heat-treated.
  • The glass maintains its color, its chemical properties as well as light transmission properties after it has been heat-treated.
